The sixth international Applied Drama conference at the University of The sixth international Applied Drama conference at the University of Exeter

April 1-5, 2008

At a time when social, cultural and political differences are causing
conflict within and between families, neighbourhoods, communities, regions,
cities and nation states, and when social space is increasingly striated
along ethnic, linguistic, religious and nationalistic lines, the conference
seeks to examine the place of drama, theatre and performance in relation to
cross-cultural dialogue and coexistence. Contributions are invited that
engage with the following issues:

* Can drama, theatre or performance be used as a tool to promote
dialogue, negotiation and/or mediation between individuals or groups with
different interests? How?

* Does drama, theatre or performance have a role to play in conflict
management and resolution processes?

* What are dialogic performance practices and how do they allow for
the simultaneous coexistence of competing voices?

* What are the spatial, corporeal, visual, aural, etc. qualities of
dialogic performances?

* How do issues of place, history, memory, language and power figure
in cross-cultural work?

* How does performance act as a site of social and cultural exchange?

* What ethical issues arise for performance practitioners/researchers
working in conflict situations?

* When is conflict constructive and how can performance promote social
change?

* How do practitioners/researchers evaluate or assess the impact of
drama, theatre or performance on social cohesion and/or change.

Deadline for abstracts/proposals of no more than 250 words: Friday January

Future of the Theatre Museum

You may have read reports in the press about the future of the Theatre Museum. This is in light of the HLF's decision not to fund a capital project at the Russell Street site. For example,

http://www.thestage.co.uk/news/newsstory.php/11830

Whilst no decisions have yet been made, a potentially alarming proposal is that the education activities move to the V&A at South Kensington. Some 20,000 students a year study at the Museum and research has shown that a major reason for attendance is the central, West End location in the heart of Theatreland, allowing students to visit theatres and study live productions.

This would not be easily replicated at South Kensington, which lacks sufficient space for the practical exploration of Drama and Theatre.

If you feel strongly about this there is a specific area for teachers' views on their website:

Drama_UK File Archive

Regular subscribers to Drama_UK will know that Yahoo only allow 20 mb for the Files area. It is not possible to buy more space. Drama_UK members are very generous and this space regularly fills. In an attempt to always have space available I am archiving files onto my own server.

In future the archive can be found here:
http://kentaylor.co.uk/die/DramaUKFileArchive/index.html

Notice that this site has two levels of navigation. A top line: Home, A Level, GCSE, SOW and within each of these a second line of navigation. For example, if you click on GCSE the main page holds files specifically for Edexcel. If you look above the word Edexcel you will see that it is possible to select AQA and OCR.

So that others may contact you to follow up on files you upload please add your name and email into the header of the Files submitted to:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/drama_uk/files/

Thank you for your generosity and for helping this site to grow.
