Towards a World Theatre Council for Children and Young People

The International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People (ASSITEJ) invites your UK association to join a meeting of international theatre organisations working with and for young people through drama and theatre.

Those who have so far accepted the invitation represent the International Theatre Institute (ITI), ASSITEJ, the International Amateur Theatre Association (AITA/IATA) and the International Drama and Theatre Association, (IDEA).

The primary purpose of the meeting is to explore closer international collaboration for mutual support in the development and provision of high quality theatre and drama activity by, with and for children and young people.

At a time of rapid worldwide change and a possible decline in the ability or willingness of states to give priority to the arts and to drama in education, mutual support is not only desirable but urgent.

While many activities related to Drama and Theatre experiences by, with and for children and young people have common roots, there has over the last fifty years been an increasing – if natural - separation. Those using drama as an educational method, those using theatre as a vehicle for didactic or artistic aims, and those who wish to engage young people in active participation in theatre making, have specialised more and more. People engaged in different disciplines have naturally formed organisations to promote their individual and special aims. We have all been successful in raising the reach and quality of what we do.

This meeting is an opportunity to look at ways in which, nationally and internationally, we can learn more from each other and be more effective in promoting our common goals.

We hope that representatives of as wide a range of UK organisations as possible will wish to meet with leading figures in the International Associations.

Please let me know as soon as possible if your organisation wishes to be represented: I envisage no more than two people from each UK association can be accommodated.

I welcome your suggestions for discussion topics and attach a draft outline programme. A Discussion Area will be set up as a Google.doc in due course.

With Best Wishes
