Canadian Symposium on Arts and Learning

Canadian Symposium on Arts and Learning selected as regional summit of the World Alliance for Arts Education.

The Canadian Network for Arts and Learning (CNAL) is holding a symposium, the Canadian Symposium in Arts and Learning, on December 3-4, 2009 in the Royal Conservatory Toronto. On May 9, 2009, the Symposium was approved as a regional summit of the World Alliance for Arts Education (WAAE)

This partnership between CNAL and WAAE reflects a deep compatibility between the two organizations. Both are non-governmental organizations dedicated to arts and learning, which were established in response to the 2006 UNESCO World Conference in Lisbon, Portugal. Both are working to support and enhance the productivity of the 2010 UNESCO World Conference in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Because they share a common background and common goals in advocacy and policy development, the two organizations are well positioned to benefit from collaboration.

WAAE has extended an invitation to its international partners to contribute toward a joint declaration on arts education to be presented at the 2010 UNESCO World Conference. This invitation provides an opportunity for Canadians to impact this pivotal international policy document through an event organized by CNAL.

This event will include contributions by Anglophones, Francophones, Allophones and First Nations who will be working together to reflect the cultural diversity of Canada.
The CNAL Board of Directors has been closely associated with WAAE since its inception. Members of the steering committee have participated in both world summits held by WAAE (2007 and 2008) and have served in leadership positions in the WAAE.

CNAL and WAAE both seek to foster networks of existing organizations in arts and learning at all levels.

WAAE is comprised of four global organizations – the International Drama/Theatre and Education Association (IDEA), the International Society for Music Education (ISME), the International Society for Education through Art (InSEA) and the World Dance Alliance (WDA).
