Initial Teacher Education Numbers for Drama
2007-11-14 20:18
Hello Colleagues,
Some have asked why the Training and Development Agency for Schools are making less places available for students to train as Drama Teachers in the coming year. Well it is not just Drama it is all subjects.
The Drama Tutors meet reularly and debate successes and concerns and recently this has been the concern. We have written to various people; you may like to read what Andy Kempe has sent to National Drama (and sign the petition). It is available here:

Web-cast Symposium
Creativity Education through the Arts: Goals, methodology and impact
November 10-11, 2007
Dear Colleague,
I would like to invite you to participate in the web-cast Symposium on Creativity Education through the Arts: Goals, methodology and impact that will take place on November 10 and 11, 2007. There is no fee for participating. The program can be found on the web-site of the UNESCO Chair in Arts and Learning, at the following url. http://educ.queensu.ca/unesco/activities/events/index.shtml
If you plan to join the web-cast, the following notes may be helpful.
It is not necessary to pre-register for the symposium. On the day of the event, you may join the web-cast and contribute to the discussion board simply by following the links that are provided beside each session of the symposium on the registration page
http://educ.queensu.ca/unesco/registration_for_events/index.shtml
At present, these links are inactive and will not lead to any content. Shortly before the beginning of the symposium, the links will be activated. At that point, the web-cast link will lead directly to the web-cast session. The link for the discussion board will lead to a self-directed log in page.
In order to ensure that you are able to make the connection in time to join the web-cast at the beginning of each session, I recommend that you follow the link five or ten minutes before the actual start of the session. The link will lead to an image that will confirm that you have made the connection. I also recommend that you ensure that your computer is configured to meet the technical requirements that are listed below, in advance of the web-cast.
Our server will permit up to 100 participants to view the web-cast at any given time. We anticipate that this capacity will be sufficient to accommodate viewers who will be watching at different times throughout the day and evening. After each session, the link leading to that part of the web-cast will remain in place. At this point, the link will lead to a steaming video recording of that particular session for viewing by participants who were not able to watch the session during the live web-cast, particularly those in other time zones. The recording will focus for several minutes at the beginning on a preparatory image which cannot be edited out until after the Symposium weekend. The recorded Symposium will begin after this brief, unavoidable delay.
We have successfully tested the technology that we will use for the web-cast. However, in the event that you might lose your connection to the web-cast, please use the original link to reconnect with our server. If a loss of connection originates with our server, we expect that it will take about 10 minutes for our staff to correct the problem. Your patience will be appreciated, if an interruption does occur.
We will be grateful if you would take a few minutes after participating in the Symposium to fill out and send the evaluation form which can be found on the web-site.
Technical Requirements:
To watch the web-cast you will need the following.
Window Media Player
You can download a PC version at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx
or a Mac OSX version at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/mac/mp9/default.aspx
You will need a PC with at least a P2 processor or a Mac G3 or higher running OSX, and a high speed Internet connection (dialup will not work).
I hope that you will be able to join the web-cast Symposium and look forward to your participation.
Sincerely,
Larry O’Farrell

NATD Conference
2007-09-14 09:07
From NATD:
The natd conference this year will be in September. You can find full details at our temporary website http://www.wlv.ac.uk/~in5127/natd . The conference will be held at Stoke Rochford Hall in Lincolnshire http://www.stokerochfordhall.co.uk/.
This year, as an experiment, we’re offering up to 30 day-rate places for MA & PGCE students at a heavily subsidised rate. Instead of committing themselves for the whole weekend at a cost of £220, students will be able to attend for Saturday only, for a fee of £55.00. Students will be able to take advantage of keynotes from Dorothy Heathcote, Edward Bond & Paul Black – the leading thinker on assessment. In addition, they can select one 3 –hour workshop. Details are attached.
We’re doing this as a token of our support for the next generation of teachers and for those hard pressed institutions trying to fit a quart into a pint pot as they educate their students. We appreciate that this event will be happening just a few days after your course begins but there’s nothing like catching them while they’re keen! I’m sorry that it’s so late in the term to let you know about this but we hope your admin team will be able to pass details on to your students over the summer break.
Students would need to book their places with natd by the beginning of September. They do this by emailing Kirsty Fechter at Kingstone School k.fechter@barnsley.org no later than 5 September. Kirsty will be on holiday in August but will be able to deal with all bookings in early September.

The sixth international Applied Drama conference at the University of The sixth international Applied Drama conference at the University of Exeter
2007-09-14 09:05
April 1-5, 2008
At a time when social, cultural and political differences are causing
conflict within and between families, neighbourhoods, communities, regions,
cities and nation states, and when social space is increasingly striated
along ethnic, linguistic, religious and nationalistic lines, the conference
seeks to examine the place of drama, theatre and performance in relation to
cross-cultural dialogue and coexistence. Contributions are invited that
engage with the following issues:
* Can drama, theatre or performance be used as a tool to promote
dialogue, negotiation and/or mediation between individuals or groups with
different interests? How?
* Does drama, theatre or performance have a role to play in conflict
management and resolution processes?
* What are dialogic performance practices and how do they allow for
the simultaneous coexistence of competing voices?
* What are the spatial, corporeal, visual, aural, etc. qualities of
dialogic performances?

* How do issues of place, history, memory, language and power figure
in cross-cultural work?
* How does performance act as a site of social and cultural exchange?
* What ethical issues arise for performance practitioners/researchers
working in conflict situations?
* When is conflict constructive and how can performance promote social
change?
* How do practitioners/researchers evaluate or assess the impact of

Free TIE Show for Drama Teachers in the UK
2007-09-14 09:02
On Wednesday 10th September from 4.30 - 6.30 p.m.
Solent People's Theatre will be performing their new
show 'The Wiltons' exclusively for an audience of
teachers - and it's completely free!
The combined performance and hi-tech workshop (with interactive voting equipment) deals with issues of Personal Finance. We'll also be showing it to our Yr 9s and to those Year 10 & 11s studying Drama/Performing Arts.
It would be great to have some 'facebook friends' from Drama Teachers in the UK come along. I would imagine that you might be able to use INSET funding for transport / cover as this show might help us find ways to deliver the 'Economic well-being' bit of Every Child Matters through Drama.
Here's a weblink to Solent People's Theatre Homepage & some blurb about the show:
http://www.solentpeoplestheatre.com/currentprojects/thewiltons/
At Home With The Wiltons
Meet the Wilton family, Ma, Pa, Granpa, Missy and John-boy in their first adventure into the perilous world of finance.
When Ma Wilton returns to work, Pa Wilton is only too happy to take control of the family finances. After all, how difficult can it be? Now free from the stresses of the workplace, lord of the house and the purse-strings Pa is itching to make some improvements…
And with a few small changes to their budget maybe he can finally afford some of the things he’s always wanted…
Like that big screen TV…
Join Pa Wilton in this hilarious farcical comedy as he learns about the economics of everyday life including…
Budgeting and money management ~ Expenditure, Earnings, Tax and Benefits
How banks work ~ Accounts, Interest
Borrowing ~ Consumer credit, Higher purchase and Illegal lenders
And asks the definitive question… ‘What is money?’
The Wiltons For Sale
The Wiltons return in their second madcap voyage into the world of finance.
After many years at home looking after the family Ma Wilton decides to return to the work place, after all she
worked in Sales before raising a family how much could it have changed?
Eager to impress as a telesales employee, flexing her creative muscle as a high flying estate agent or attracted by the glamour of the cut-throat time-share industry, Ma Wilton tries her hand at a diverse range of jobs, navigating her way through the complexities of commercial economy.
But as the more shady aspects of a certain new job begin to reveal themselves, the question looms… Does she have what it takes?
…And are her new colleagues really all they seem?...
Join Ma Wilton as she is thrust into the treacherous world of business finance and learns about:

Declaration by IDEA ISME InSEA - UNESCO 2006
2006-04-02 20:09
To mark World Theatre Day this year an historic Joint
Declaration was composed and signed by the Presidents
of the International Associations of Drama/Theatre,
Music and Arts Education which was presented at the
recent UNESCO World Congress of Arts in Education in
Lisbon, Portugal. See below:
UNESCO WORLD ARTS CONFERENCE
Lisbon, March 6, 2006
JOINT DECLARATION OF THE
international drama/theatre and education association (IDEA)
international society for education through the arts (InSEA)
international society for music education (ISME)
This is an historic moment in international arts education. After six years of preparatory meetings, IDEA, InSEA and ISME have now united to define an integrated strategy that responds to a critical moment in human history: social fragmentation, a dominant global culture of competition, endemic urban and ecological violence, and the marginalization of key educational and cultural languages of transformation.
In a visionary agenda in the aftermath of the World War II, UNESCO recognized the unique role that arts education can play in the creation of a culture of peace, international understanding, social cohesion and sustainable development. However, at that time, few could have anticipated the socio-cultural needs that would be generated by the accelerated technological change during the intervening decades; and today few can imagine the impact and challenges of technological convergence in the immediate future.
We believe that today’s knowledge-based, post-industrial societies require citizens with confident flexible intelligences, creative verbal and non-verbal communication skills, abilities to think critically and imaginatively, intercultural understandings and an empathetic commitment to cultural diversity.
Research increasingly shows that these personal attributes are acquired through the process of learning and applying artistic languages. We welcome decisions by governments throughout the world to place educational reform and cultural development at the heart of their agendas. However, we know that there is not always the political and professional will to integrate the arts into an effective ‘education for all’, as vital instruments for learning human rights, responsible citizenship and inclusive democracy.
Drawing membership from more than 90 countries, our global alliance of arts education organisations involves leading practitioners and promotes innovative practices in arts education internationally. Through our national affiliations and individual memberships, we draw on the experiences of more than one million dedicated and courageous teachers, artists/performers, researchers, scholars, community leaders, administrators and policy makers who themselves are in touch with formal and informal educational communities throughout the world.
Our three organisations are uniquely positioned to advance professional practices and policies in the visual arts, music and theatre/drama education. We provide:
• effective channels for international communication and the exchange of policy and pedagogical resources;
• national, regional and world forums which debate and disseminate innovative educational theories and practices;
• conceptual and professional structures to preserve tangible and intangible artistic cultures (particularly in the developing world), that are threatened by globalization;
• models of intercultural analysis that explore aspects of traditional and new media and enable diverse pedagogies to be demonstrated and exchanged;
• research into pedagogies for personal and social transformation; and
• critical investigation into the educational, socio-economic and cultural impacts of the arts.
Together, we will advocate new and appropriate paradigms of education which both transmit and transform culture through the humanizing languages of the arts, and which are founded on principles of cooperation, not competition. For more than half a century, our associations have contributed significantly to the development of curricula and teaching approaches. We are now ready to respond proactively to the diverse social and cultural needs of our world. In response to the urgent crises of our times, we embrace the challenge to make our exceptional resources available to governments and educational communities across the globe.
In the visual arts, critical and reflective pedagogies and new means of artistic production offer students opportunities to explore their multicultural, multi-technological visual worlds. Through the performing arts, educators are transforming classrooms into theatres of creative dialogue, equipping young people to enact solutions to contemporary social needs and challenges. In music education, the new technologies provide astonishing opportunities to develop intercultural awareness and collaborative production.
Collectively the arts offer young people unique opportunities to understand and create their own cultural and personal identities. They stimulate interdisciplinary study and participatory decision-making, and motivate young people to engage in active learning and creative questioning.
Our three organisations have formed an alliance for strategic action based on principled and sustained dialogue. Our primary aim is to accelerate the implementation of arts education policies internationally. We want to collaborate with all governments, networks, educational institutions, communities and individuals who share our vision.
We challenge UNESCO to fulfill the responsibilities of its founding mandate by joining us to make arts education central to a world agenda for sustainable human development and social transformation.

Future of the Theatre Museum
2006-03-16 10:39
You may have read reports in the press about the
future of the Theatre Museum. This is in light of the
HLF's decision not to fund a capital project at the
Russell Street site. For example,
http://www.thestage.co.uk/news/newsstory.php/11830
Whilst no decisions have yet been made, a potentially alarming proposal is that the education activities move to the V&A at South Kensington. Some 20,000 students a year study at the Museum and research has shown that a major reason for attendance is the central, West End location in the heart of Theatreland, allowing students to visit theatres and study live productions.
This would not be easily replicated at South Kensington, which lacks sufficient space for the practical exploration of Drama and Theatre.
If you feel strongly about this there is a specific area for teachers' views on their website:

Some 20,000 students a year study at the Museum and research has shown that a major reason for attendance is the central, West End location in the heart of Theatreland, allowing students to visit theatres and study live productions.
This would not be easily replicated at South Kensington, which lacks sufficient space for the practical exploration of Drama and Theatre.
If you feel strongly about this there is a specific area for teachers' views on their website:

Live Theatre via the Internet!
2006-03-03 17:45
I have received this from Fabrice Raina, president of
Auteurs de L'Ombre and Cultural Office Manager for
The Castellane Centre:
The Worldwide Week Of Playwrights will take place from march 20th to march 27th 2006. You can follow the essential part of the programs through the live stream on http://www.auteursdelombre.org/ (presently under construction) and http://www.cs-lacastellane.com . Most of the content will be live-recorded and uploaded via our WebTV, with reruns every morning thereafter. Some content will be transmitted in differed times. We propose this year again, to all playwrights, theater and cultural structures which cannot transmit their videos, lectures or debates in a live manner, to indicate us the links to their recorded footage (extracts or complete recordings of their works) in order for them to benefit freely of the tens of thousands of internet viewers across the world. You may also send us the physical video sources, with a written authorization for their transmission, for us to upload to our website during the week of demonstration at the following address: AEC La Castellane / 216, boulevard Henri Barnier 13016 Marseille France.
You are still in time to inform us of your actions and to become a relay for the Worldwide Week: lectures, debates, videoconference debates, plays... Indicate us the program you propose and we will write-out your participation slip. Please indicate us your Name, Last name, Address, Website, E-mail and phone number.

Drama_UK File Archive
2006-02-28 21:11
Regular subscribers to Drama_UK will know that Yahoo
only allow 20 mb for the Files area. It is not
possible to buy more space. Drama_UK members are very
generous and this space regularly fills. In an
attempt to always have space available I am archiving
files onto my own server.
In future the archive can be found here:
http://kentaylor.co.uk/die/DramaUKFileArchive/index.html
Notice that this site has two levels of navigation. A top line: Home, A Level, GCSE, SOW and within each of these a second line of navigation. For example, if you click on GCSE the main page holds files specifically for Edexcel. If you look above the word Edexcel you will see that it is possible to select AQA and OCR.
So that others may contact you to follow up on files you upload please add your name and email into the header of the Files submitted to:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/drama_uk/files/
Thank you for your generosity and for helping this site to grow.
