ICT Worksheet 2: Using the Internet for Drama in Education
The following is a worksheet used by Ken in training sessions. You may prefer to open this page in your web browser as a new window to have access to it throughout the session. To do this:
  • If you are using Windows right mouse click and select 'open page in a new window.'
  • If you are using a Mac hold down the Control button and mouse click then select ‘open page in a new window.’

Now you can switch between the Worksheet and any other web site you are working on by selecting from the Window menu.

1. Open a Web Browser

Depending upon previous experience either log on using your passwords or use the generic ones allocated during the session.

  • Start Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.
  • Explore the toolbar and ensure you know how the program works.
  • Learn how to make a Bookmark

Remember to bookmark all the sites you are interested in.

2. Set up an email account

If you do not yet have a working email account go to:

    Hotmail

    http://www.hotmail.com

    and establish one there.

This is known as a web based email account. You can use this account anywhere you have access to a web browser and does not have the usual configuration problem.

    Alternatively you might try Yahoo
    http://uk.yahoo.com/

There are many other 'free email accounts,' a full list can be seen at:

    Free email address directory
    http://www.emailaddresses.com/

3. Send email

Start by sending email to Ken to announce your success. Remember Ken has several addresses. Usually you would use

but if you are in a training session he might prefer

Then try to send email to other delegates at the conference.

4. Join an email discussion group

We have been running an email discussion group for Drama Teachers for some time now. On this list you can ask questions of fellow teachers or offer advice. Join this list by going to the following link:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/drama_uk

Once you have subscribed you can also review the discussions we have been having at this URL, access files, calendars and lots more.

5. Search the web

Navigate to Ken's

Drama in Education Web Site

Take a look at

Materials and then ICT

There is a section there that explains searching. You might:

  • follow through this section and look at the links
  • search for ideas for a lesson
  • research a Drama practitioner you are teaching
  • discover a discussion group on a subject of interest
  • look for images to use
  • bookmark items you find
  • download material
  • print out information
  • find things you didn't know you were looking for!

6. Browse the web

Complete the following:

7. Explore Yahoo! Groups

Log into Yahoo!Groups at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/drama_uk

Use your FULL email address and a password of your choice. If you get stuck read the help carefully. Explore the menu bar carefully. Then complete the following:

  • Open the Group Info tab and read about the purpose of the group.
  • Open the Members tab and see what information is made available there. Update your own record if necessary.
  • Open the Messages tab and read through past discussions.
  • Open the Calendar and see if there any events you wish to add.
  • Open the Links tab. If you can suggest sites to look at put these in.
  • Open the Vault tab. If you want to submit a lesson plan or other material to the Drama in Education Site you can place it here. Alternatively you can email it to .

8. Questions

Make a list of questions that you would like to ask to help you understand and improve your ICT skills. Use the Internet to solve your own questions by:

  • running an Internet search in a Web Browser, try
    http://uk.yahoo.com/
  • emailing the Drama_UK group at
  • emailing Ken for help -
    today on but usually

9. Evidence

Collect responses to the above as evidence for your ICT profile. Review your profile and make sure you have covered each area. You may be asked to complete an ICT profile by your employer.

Homework

Produce a lesson plan that is entirely your own. Word process it and submit it to Kenneth Taylor on disk or as an attachment. This lesson will be put onto the Web and made available for future use. Remember, you submit one lesson and receive many others in return.
