1. Poetry Archive

If you have ever wanted to hear poets reading their own work, read on: 'The Poetry Archive exists to help make poetry accessible, relevant and enjoyable to a wide audience. It came into being as a result of a meeting, in a recording studio, between Andrew Motion, soon after he became U.K. Poet Laureate in 1999, and the recording producer, Richard Carrington. They agreed about how enjoyable and illuminating it is to hear poets reading their work and about how regrettable it was that, even in the recent past, many important poets had not been properly recorded.'

2. The Roundhouse Reopens

They claim that 'the Roundhouse Trust will rejuvenate this extraordinary building and restore it back to the centre of London's cultural life. The redeveloped Roundhouse will house up to 3300 people standing or up to 1700 seated. It will provide a highly flexible and adaptable performance space that will give artists and audiences opportunities and experiences they cannot find elsewhere. And it will accommodate a programme of work that reflects the excitement and diversity of 21st century culture. It will include a wide range of the performing arts including music, theatre, dance, circus and digital media.'

Their web site is certainly worth looking at!

3. Creative Learning

Creative Learning projects are about access, to both the work on The Old Vic stage and the organisation's rich history and heritage. Much of the work supports the national curriculum and often improves the personal and social skills of the participants, developing confidence, problem solving and communication.

In the last 12 months some 8,500 people have participated in education workshops and activities on-and-off site; whilst our community performances have attracted more that 3,000 local residents, many visiting The Old Vic for the first time.

4 .GloPAC

GloPAC is an international organization of institutions and individuals committed to using innovative digital technologies to create easily accessible, multimedia, and multilingual information resources for the study and preservation of the performing arts.

GloPAD is a multimedia, multilingual, Web-accessible database containing digital images, texts, video clips, sound recordings, and complex media objects (such as 3-D images) related to the performing arts from around the world.

There are loads of resources here to help you in your teaching ...

5. BBC 60 Second Shakespeare

The BBC want as many 60 Second Shakespeare submissions as possible. But please make sure that you agree to the rules before you join this campaign (especially about obtaining permission). Read more on their site.

6. Disengagement - Report
Disengagement from secondary education - a scooping study

This report has attempted to tell a continuous story about those who have disengaged from the education process, from their time at school, through further education and into their working lives, by addressing the following research questions. What are the characteristics of the disengaged young people in secondary education? Who among them participates in further learning and why? What impact does such participation have on their labour market outcomes? The key findings to emerge from this study, which has used large national data sets, supplement the evidence acquired through largely qualitative and small-scale studies on the nature and possible consequences of disengagement from secondary education.

7. National Film & Television Archive

The National Film and Television Archive is the largest collection of films and television titles in Europe. Access is possible for home video; for screening on 16mm or 35mm; to view for research; to use as part of programmes you may be putting together, and many other ways to suit your needs.

Titles range from modern movies such as Code Unknown (2000) and The Last Resort (2000), right back to early newsreels documenting everything from the opening of Tutankhamen's tomb to the suffragette movement. From the most important documentaries, animated works, World Cinema titles and short films to British classics like A Matter of Life and Death, If.... and the Hitchcock masterpieces, this is a vital resource for anyone who enjoys film, any researcher, cinema programmer or anybody who needs access to moving image material.

Aside from helping current audiences enjoy and learn from this massive moving image treasure trove, the bfi is resolved to ensuring that the Archive can be appreciated by future generations - which means a rigorous and expert process of restoration and preservation.

8. Open Educational Resources

Open Educational Resources (OER) in higher education are the subject of a new study by a global organisation.

Open Educational Resources are digitised materials offered freely and openly for educators, students and self-learners to use and re-use for teaching, learning and research.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Centre for Educational Research and Innovation is handling the study, and is launching a web-based survey for individual teachers, instructors and researchers using or producing OER.

Researchers are inviting anyone working in a higher educational institution that uses or produces open learning content, such as courses, courseware, content modules, learning objects, collections and journals, or open software tools to develop, use, re-use and deliver learning content, to take the the online survey. It should not take more than 10 - 15 minutes to complete. Anybody completing the questionnaire will receive a free electronic copy of the final report.

9. The Guide to Musical Theatre

One of the most comprehensive listing of musical shows on-line. There is an on-line guide to books on theatre and a direct link to the Theatre Bookshop. Are you looking for that original cast recording? Why not search the cast recordings listings.

There is a video and DVD guide and a Play Selection Guide detailing cast requirements, etc. with links to on-line purchase.

There are over 800 musical shows and nearly 10,000 plays listed.

1. Higher Standards, Better Schools for All

The DFES claim the following:

The past decade has seen wide ranging reforms across the education sector in order to provide each child with the high quality education they need as an individual to fulfill their potential.
The main measure of the reshaping of schools has been test and examination results. The schools inspectorate OfSTED says there are fewer failing schools, and more resources and teachers. Things proven to work include teaching to smaller groups and when schools have full parental engagement, have a strong individual ethos, involve external partners, and have greater freedoms to run themselves.

Read the paper and see if you agree.

3. ITT materials

Initial Teacher Training materials to support Careers Education and Guidance and Work Related Learning

The Careers Education Support Programme is pleased to launch a briefing pack on Careers Education and Work Related Learning to support teachers in initial training.

While it is not obligatory for initial teacher training courses to cover careers education or personal planning and review and guidance, the Teacher Training Agency has recognised that newly qualified teachers can become involved in this work right from the start of their teaching career.

Consultation with ITT helped guide the development of the pack which aims to cover:-

A basic knowledge of what CEG and work-related learning involves
How schools deliver it
and what role they might have in it.

The materials link through to other key resources including Careers in a Nutshell and Into 14-19 Learning.

A booklet has also been commissioned to give teachers an insight into the labour market, changes in the world of work and future trends in employment and this will be on the site shortly. While this will be available to anyone who wants to download it from Cegnet, there will also be a link to it from the ITT materials.

TTA has promised to signpost these materials in its dissemination of information to ITT providers.

4. Teacher recruitment campaign resumes

The Use your head. Teach. recruitment campaign resumes on 2 January 2006 with four weeks of TV advertising. The campaign also features press, poster and online advertising, and includes a range of new print adverts.

5. New draft standards for classroom teachers

The aim is to bring coherence and progression to the suite of standards for qualified teacher status (QTS), induction, senior teacher (threshold), advanced skills teacher (AST) and excellent teacher.

There will be a further chance to contribute to the consultation when they publish the draft standards in January. The TDA encourage all our stakeholders to share their views with them.

1. IDIERI scheduled for Kingston, Jamaica

This is just a general update on IDIERI scheduled for Kingston, Jamaica, from July 13 -18, 2006. This present weekend brings us to the end of the worst Atlantic storm season on record - 24 named tropical storms, 13 hurricanes of which 3 were Category 5. Needless to say, the information technology buffs here at UWI have a backlog of work to catch up on after experiencing a great deal of disruption.

Fortunately, our IDIERI website is now accessible but not yet interactive. However, I felt that most people intending to come will need to make plans, so please feel free to go to the site for the information and I will e-mail everyone just as soon as we are ready to roll with registration. That won't close until March 31, 2006, or until we are fully subscribed,
whichever comes first!! Please let any other interested persons know about the conference and website too. Thanks!

Please feel free to e-mail us at this address if you need anymore information.

Hello Colleagues,

- Does the curriculum inspire and challenge learners?
- Does it give them the skills and knowledge that will allow them to flourish in the future?
- Is the curriculum responding to the forces for change, such as changes in society and the impact of technology?
- What is education for?

QCA asked subject communities these questions and more at summits held in early 2005. They invited subject representatives from a range of backgrounds including primary and secondary teachers, school inspectors, policy makers, academics and those working in industry.

«Theatre/Drama and Education: Taking up New Roles for the 21st century»

17-18-19 March 2006, Athens , Greece

Pre- and After Conference events 13-22 March 2006

CALL FOR PAPERS & WORKSHOPS

Dear friends , the 5th Athens International Theatre/Drama & Performing Arts Education Conference is organized by the Hellenic Theatre/Drama Education Network in partnership with the International Drama/Theatre Education Association-IDEA. and in collaboration with a number of academic, professional and artistic institutions.

Conference 2006 aims, content and rational

This Conference intends to contribute to the creative debate between educationalists, academics, university students, artists and policy makers over the possibilities and applications of theatre and the performing arts in schools and in within other educational contexts.

We live in a world which changes rapidly, and is defined by information and by the power of the media; the new generations grow up in a damaged environment, characterized by Globalization, where the social differences are becoming bigger and bigger and the peaceful coexistence of peoples is often disrupted by wars, fanaticism and racism.

What is the role of the arts -performing arts especially- within education? What is –or can be- their role in the lives of the youth, who have to grow up and live in such a world?

The 2006 Athens Conference aim is to search for potential meeting points for Theatre/Performing Arts, Education (formal or informal) and Society. Some of the questions to be posed and examined during the Conference include:

In what ways are the arts and education influenced by the current intense, sometimes even violent, social changes? Are there any new forms of art that can be created, in order to follow today’s needs?

How do young people perceive themselves and the “other” within today’s world?

How can we provoke an opening of the school to society? How could we create a new cultural education and an updated code of ethics within schools?

What is the role of educationalists as artists, and that of artists as educationalists, in teaching through the arts?

The 2006 Athens Conference will address these important issues through a variety of channels and outlets:

· Theatre teaching (as an art form)

· Theatre/Drama as an educational means and teaching tool (D.I.E.)

· Theatre/Drama as Social Intervention

· Community Theatre

· Theatre for Development

· Theatre-in-Education (T.I.E.)

· Playing-Through-Theatre methods

· Dramatherapy – Psychodrama

· Puppetry and Shadow Theatre

· Music Education

· Dance and Movement

· Audiovisual Education (Photography, Video, Cinema, Media, etc)

· Other fields of research or practice in theatre/drama and performance arts in education

For whom : This conference is open to educationalists of all levels and all fields, to university students and graduates of pedagogical and theatre departments, and to artists who work in educational contexts (formal or informal). The Conference is also open to anyone who wishes to contribute to the creative debate over the teaching, practice or the meeting points of the performing arts in all forms of education.

September 2005

1. The TTA becomes the Training and Development Agency for Schools

The Teacher Training Agency (TTA) became the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) on 1 September. The new agency takes over the work of the TTA and now has extra responsibilities to improve training and development for the entire school workforce – teachers and support staff - of around one million people.

Ralph Tabberer, who becomes chief executive of the TDA, said:

“The Government has declared that ‘Every child matters’. The creation of the TDA signals that every member of the school workforce matters too.

“Schools are changing, with the number of support staff - such as teaching assistants, library managers and break supervisors - almost doubling over the past eight years. Now we need to make sure those changes result in improvements for children.

“Some schools are outstanding in recognising that support staff as well as teachers contribute to the performance of schools and pupils. They ensure they have training plans tailored to developing the skills and abilities of each individual. Others need encouragement to join this revolution.

“The TDA will work with existing and new partner organisations to help all schools improve the training and development opportunities their staff need to benefit pupils directly. We look forward to the challenge.”

The TDA, chaired by Sir Brian Follett, will work with the General Teaching Council for England, the National College for School Leadership, local authorities, trades unions and other organisations representing all staff working with children and young people, to take forward the Government’s strategy for school improvement.

It aims to build on the success of the TTA over the past five years in increasing the number of trainee teachers - at 41,300 the number of entrants to teacher training in 2004-05 was the highest for 30 years – and improving the quality of their training.

Visit http://www.tda.gov.uk/ for further information on the TDA and its new remit.

2. Write a play online

David Craggs has emailed to tell me about his site. He would like as many people as possible to send original scripts to post on the site. They will be listed, explained and credited to the correct people. And will even give writers the chance to explain their work with a separate document attachment. He will not judge the work in terms of quality so provided there are no breaches of existing copyright or anything deemed of an overtly racist or sexual nature everything will be posted. He will offer private feedback.

He is also running a project where he has started the first scene of a play with stage directions that he invites others to complete. To avoid obscenities and nonsense he will be screening all ideas before posting anything.

He has many ideas for the site in its current state and how I can expand it to include Lighting, prop and costume ideas, original music scores and sound tracks. Poems, short stories. film scripts. Essay forums and references to the practitioners studied at the various levels. Links onto university courses. etc etc..

If you want to contact him see the feedback sheet online.
