Area/Scheme of Work : Refugees with an emphasis on Kosovo

Objectives: By the end of the lesson the pupils will be able to:

Introduction Short warm up.
Know/Guess about a picture. Handout picture to pupils. What do they know, what can they guess by looking at the picture?What has happened?
Go back a week in time. Create ÔstreetÕ and spontaneous impro. Teacher to start and others join in. Pupils must think of who their character is. Freeze and spotlight some of the pupils.
Develop a street celebration. Teach simple dance steps to whole class. Select some to be dancers, some eating, drinking, clapping etc.

Freeze as TIR enters as military police.

Reaction to news.

Tell villagers they are not welcome to stay, they must leave at 5pm Friday.
Discuss options. How seriously do they take the news? Will they try and stay? What might frighten them into going? Intro idea of snipers.

Re run above scene with sniper firing.

Debrief reactions.

Choose one pupil to be ÔshotÕ. Run for 5 seconds of immediate reaction.
TIR as military police. Emphasise seriousness of instructions.
(Families to role play parents telling children they must leave) What questions would they ask? Where would they go?
Families to pack belongings in mime and create whole class F.P. of them waiting to leave. Set to music. Maybe thought track.
