The Box
Lesson Plan for Year 9
Aim
To explore perceptions of guilt and innocence
To explore use of facial expression.
Stimulus
The Box + TIR + volunteer
Introduction
Teacher asks for volunteer to come up and discover the box. As they do, TIR
comes in and says that the student is not supposed to be in this classroom,
everyone has been looking for the box and asks for them to come with her.
Activity
Discussion - was the student guilty? was the teacher unfair? What should the
teacher have done? What should the pupil have done?
Into pairs: improvise a scenario, similar to the one they have witnessed. It
could be the same, it could go completely differently but the student must find
the box and the tecaher must come in and discover them. Add an ending.
Show some of the work just where they are rehearsing to avoid time wasting.
Individually create a freezeframe to show someone caught redhanded - pay particular
attention to facial expression and body language. Is the person feeling very
guilty? How do we show that through our faces? Change now to someone who is
innocent and knows it. How is the facial expression different? Show that in
your work.
Into groups of four create a freezeframe on either guilt or innocence. Feedback
on these.
Evaluation
Discussion and feedback about the lesson.
