SEGREGATION

Target Learning Outcomes For All.

To devise a scene in small groups based on a visual stimulus about segregation.

Target Learning Outcomes For High Attainers.

To be able to direct and be directed within the group.

To be able to show/ hold a frozen picture that will give a clear start/ end to the audience.

Target Differentiation For Low Attainers.

To be able to maintain a character.

Materials/ Equipment Needed.

Whiteboard and pens.

Visual stimulus of segregation signs.

Activities. ( At the start of the lesson you could set the chairs out so that the girls are sat on one side and the boys on the other. Also label the board Girls/ Boys so that the seats correspond with the signs, thus linking in with the topic of ‘Segregation’ and the signs used to depict this.)

  1. Discuss/ brainstorm on the board the relevance and meaning of the signs.
  2. Who would display these?

    Why were they introduced?

    How would this make the black people feel?

  3. Split into groups of 3-6. Devise a scene based on one of these signs. Start/ end each scene with a frozen picture. Think about status and how it can be demonstrated.
  4. Perform and evaluate.

Homework.

Make a list of the interviews, songs, soundscapes and other sound effects needed for the recording of the radio documentary.
